Privacy, plainly.

Operator details. The service is operated and sold by Colin Wren, a sole proprietor in Brooklyn, New York. Ask the past is the product name; Colin Wren is the legal seller. Have counsel review this notice for the countries where you will sell access.

What we process

• API content: your prompt or messages are transmitted through our hosting provider's gateway to the selected private model backend for inference. The anonymous homepage free demo may store submitted messages and generated replies for product analysis when prompt logging is enabled; paid API requests are not intentionally added to that analysis log.
• Payment information: Stripe processes payment credentials, transaction identifiers, and billing details. Ask the past does not receive or store full card numbers.
• Technical information: our hosting and payment providers may process request timestamps, IP/device information, status codes, fraud signals, and other operational metadata under their own policies.
• Product analytics: the homepage sends a small allow-listed set of anonymous events to a US-based analytics provider: page and screen views, selected model, and free-demo request status/latency. We do not send prompt text, model replies, payment credentials, or names to that provider. The site does not use session recordings or automatic click capture.

Why we process it

We process this information to deliver completions, authenticate and settle payments, prevent fraud and abuse, keep the service secure, troubleshoot failures, analyze and improve the free demo and its reliability, comply with law, and respond to support requests. We do not use customer prompts or completions to train a model.

Service providers

Our current infrastructure includes a hosting provider, a US-based product-analytics provider, private model backends, and Stripe for payment processing. Each processes information under its own privacy terms and may retain it in other countries. See Stripe’s Privacy Center for payment details, or contact us for the current full list of providers.

Retention and choices

When the free-demo analysis log is enabled, it stores the model ID, submitted conversation, generated reply, and provider usage metadata. It is not tied to an account identity; it may be retained until the operator deletes it or the database retention policy removes it. Provider logs and payment records may also remain for security, accounting, fraud prevention, dispute handling, or legal compliance under the provider’s retention rules.

The homepage respects browser Do Not Track and provides a local opt-out for its anonymous analytics request. In the browser console, askThePastAnalytics.optOut() stops future analytics events; askThePastAnalytics.optIn() turns them back on. You may also contact us to ask about access, correction, deletion, objection, or other privacy rights. We may need to verify your request and may be unable to remove information that a provider or law requires us to retain.

Children and sensitive data

The service is not directed to children. Do not submit passwords, payment details, government identifiers, health information, confidential business information, or other sensitive personal data unless you have a lawful basis and are comfortable sending it to the listed providers.
